This past week hubby and I went to Jonesborough, Tennessee for something quilty for me. I have been a long time fan of Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably. Their colorful fabric designs and quilt designs wow me. Meeting them in person was going to be another Wow! Monday night was a lecture by Kaffe and he did not disappoint. He captured the audience with his creative journey and process along with lots of humor and a beautiful slide presentation. Hubby even enjoyed the lecture!
The next day the workshop was at Tennessee Quilts. This is one fabulous quilt shop – 2 floors packed with fabric and the back wall is all Kaffe Collective! Sooo much color! The owners and staff are so personable, friendly and helpful. It may be a good thing I don’t live closer to this shop!
I did bring some fabrics with me. Brandon told me which would work with the design we were putting together and which would not and why they would not.
I understood the concept immediately and went downstairs to shop. Kaffe was there to help. He got really excited when he saw I was using reds and started pulling out bolt after bolt of fabric that would work with my quilt. It was like watching a dance. And, he didn’t just pull his fabrics – he went all over the store pulling out what worked!
Fun 50’s and 60’s music was played and we cut our diamonds and placed them on the design boards. Kaffe and Brandon came along to help and critique. Even though there were 30 in the class, they were always there when needed.
Sadly, this quilt is now in a project box to be worked on at a later date. Coming home all pumped from the workshop would have been the ideal time to get to the sewing, but, sigh, there are commitments and obligations. It will be joyful, though, when those reds come bursting out of the project box.
